If I wanted to read Chinese, I hadn't fiddled with the registry key. In fact, that was my setting for my first year with TB, until I found out that I can switch it off in favour of displaying German umlauts! So, mails encoded in Big5 and written in Chinese are displayed correctly with my Win98's factory setting. Important though is to choose a font that knows Chinese characters: Options / Preferences / Viewer / MicroEd / Font MingLiu works fine here. If it doesn't on your system, then there appears indeed to be a difference between Eng-Win98 und Chin-Win98. Do you have the reg key HKLU/.../fontassoc? -- Cheers, Thomas.
