All TB! users presumably subscribe to this list at least, if not the others too, so will have read the wealth of information on Smilies and how to deal with them. Other e-mail programmes work in different ways so they either accept Smilies, in which case the user involved will also be used to them and know what to do if they have the option of not wanting to see them or, with the rest, they will just see the normal : - ) instead.
