I don't even know if the smilies work in the HTML viewer... I suppose they do, but it's not relevant. As long as the "Start in" folder is correct, you are using the Rich Text Viewer (not plain text or HTML) and the "Smileys" option is checked in the viewer pop-up menu, you'll see them.
