The problem is that Ben _doesn't_ sort by time received, he sorts by
subject.

I usually sort by time (actually time created rather than time received)
and have old messages at the top and new messages at the bottom. However
when I tried sorting by subject I was able to duplicate what Ben sees -
within each thread the messages are sorted in reverse chronological
order: new messages at the top and older ones below that.

I suspect there is no way around that.
