That might depend on the macro you're using.

However, as I generally don't use handles, I tried something for you
(with the latest beta though, since you only mentioned an older version
I couldn't install exactly the same version)

I created three AB entries with handles.
Created a new message,
Entered two handles in the To: header
Went to another header
Went back to the To header
Added a comma a space and another handle
Left the To header
TB inserted the complete address
