(Ed, though someone else might find this useful:)
Here's what I got so far. First, the top half of my reply template
which uses some quick templates I got from somewhere on the web:

%QInclude(cleansub)%-
Message received at: %ODATESHORT:%OTIME
%_Wrap_Text="%SmartQuotes"%-
%___%_Wrap_Limit="70"%-
%QInclude(wrap)%-

Next, my "good bye" words list:

when %SmartQuotes parses thru the original text, if any of those lines
in their entirety are present, that line and whatever follows it is
snipped (unlike the "hello words" parse which snips just the offending
line).
I add to it as I go, when I see something in a reply that doesn't need
to be there.
It will be even better when the "good bye" regexp function is
implemented. Now, if I put "AD" in my "good bye" list, it will snip
any line containing "bread" "cradle" etc.

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a
scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to
mean -- neither more nor less.'
