I don't know if it will work on IMAP because I don' use and haven't even
tried IMAP.

What I do in some of my POP folders is to "Use folder specific deletion
settings", which you can find in the Deletion tab of the folder
properties. When you tick this option the "possibilities" are displayed.
Then select Alternative deletion to move message to your 'archive'
folder and also select "use alternative deletion to purge this folder".
This way, if in the General tan of folder properties you have selected
to Keep messages in base let's say for 7 days, when you do a "purge and
compress" (which I do daily) your messages older than 7 says are moved
to the archive folder.

Hope I've made it clear enough.
