It sounds like you are describing the fact that all messages that are downloaded from the remote server are first downloaded to the inbox before being processed by the sorting office. Once the messages have been processed by the sorting office, they will move on. There's no need to focus on the "temporary - in transit" content of the Inbox if it all resolves once the download and sort operation is complete. I don't use IMAP myself, but if you are using IMAP then perhaps it further complicates this entire process and involves messages not synchronised between remote and local inbox.
