There was thread recently about this in the German TB-NG. This was
about newsgroups, not mails. TB can handle growing references, but it
is apparently not appreciated in the usenet to have more than 20 or so
reference headers.

The relevant RFC (forgot the number) suggests that the first and a
couple of the last references are being kept so as to not exceeed the
magic number, and some news readers handle that automatically. TB is a
mail reader. Are you referring to the usenet? Because for mail, the
number of references doesn't really matter, and the RFC applies only
to newsgroups.
