I had the same problems a few times with GMX. I went into the web
interface and redirected the offending message to myself and deleted
the original. Then there was no problem.

I put it down to a glitch in the GMX software, as it has stopped now
(touch wood).

Confirmed. I don't know what the reason is. I suspected some new
server-side software.
