When TB receives a message in unicode (UTF-8 being the currently most
popular version), the plain-text viewer is out of its league and TB
will switch automatically to the richt-text viewer. This would look
like you are seeing an "HTML version of a plain-text message", but
it's not HTML.

Hit F9 and see whether you find something like this in the headers:

   Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8
