Hello, everyone.
I thank each one of you who responded to my query. Before I provide additional information that some of you requested, I will note that the following Web page from RITLabs' Knowledge Base indicates that modern versions of NAV work transparently with The Bat!:
http://www.ritlabs.com/kb/idx/8/003/article/
Using Norton Antivirus
Old Versions of Norton Antivirus can work as POP-proxy, and can be used with The Bat without plugin. POP3-server in The Bat will became "localhost", username must be changed according to NAV documentation and include username and real POP3-server name.
Last version of NAV works transparently and doesn't require any changes from user's side.
I currently have Norton SystemWorks 2003 Professional installed on my system running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2), but I was given Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier as a gift.
With NAV 2003, I have the progress bar enabled for outgoing e-mail, but it simply does not appear when I use The Bat!, although it does appear with every other e-mail client that I have tried.

'Code 2' thank you for letting me know that you are successfully using Norton AntiVirus with The Bat!; I appreciate your time and response.

Hi, Allie! Where can I find the Eicar test virus?
Thanks!

Thanks, Ian. I do think that there is a problem with my system.

Thank you for your message and offer to provide additional information, Jack! We are running the same version of NAV (part of SystemWorks 2003). I have The Bat! configured to scan incoming and outgoing e-mail.

Thanks for your suggestions, Jeff. I do have automatic e-mail scanning enabled in NAV. I check for new virus definitions every single *day* (and have the feature to download the definitions automatically enabled, too). I am paranoid, and I run NAV once or twice per day, usually during lunch and before shutting down (or the first thing the next morning).
I think that Symantec normally releases updates in the United States on Thursdays, unless a severe threat arises. One can download each day's build of the virus definitions, however, from Symantec's Web site. (You just cannot use LiveUpdate.)
Regarding conflicts with other e-mail clients, The Bat! was the first client that I installed, in addition to my existing client, Outlook XP/2002. The progress bar for NAV failed to appear at that point.
I have been evaluating other clients and the progress bar appeared (appears) with all of them. I have deleted all clients that I decided against, because they do not support Cyrillic messages, except for The Bat! and for PocoMail 3.2.
I think the problem is that my operating system is corrupted. One day, Windows XP Professional suddenly took a very, very long time to shut down. When I filed an issue with Microsoft Support, the suggestions of the representative that I implemented, including a hot fix that was to be a part of SP 2, made matters worse. I am going to have to do a clean installation of Windows XP Pro, which may clear up the problem with The Bat! and NAV. (At that point, I will install SystemWorks 2005 Premier.) Another indication of a problem with Windows, and possibly SystemWorks Pro 2003, is that automatic updating in SystemWorks Pro stopped working a few months ago. Not too long ago, the feature started working again; perhaps SP 2 fixed the problem (which was with Windows and not SystemWorks...maybe).
I want to decide upon a replacement for Outlook before I reinstall Windows XP Pro from scratch. I don't want to clutter up the new installation with e-mail programs when I will end up registering only one of them, and deleting the rest.
The Bat! and PocoMail are the leading candidates at this point. Unfortunately, both programs have problems with KOI8-R-encoded e-mail, which I need to send messages that contain Russian (which is not a problem with Outlook XP).
I will go into detail about the problems with The Bat! in a separate message, although I realize that the topic is of little interest to most TBUDL users. I have had some brief exchanges with RITLabs' developers and I even sent them my KOI8-R and Windows-1251 (Cyrillic) encoded text files, at their request, but they never responded.
The Bat! seems to work pretty much as expected with the Windows-1251 encoding, even accepting my signature file (a text file containing English and Russian), which I created and encoded as Windows-1251 with EmEditor.
When I try KOI8-R encoding my messages with The Bat!, which is the encoding I should be using for Russian e-mail, the KOI8-R-encoded signature file turns into garbage (the Russian text), although I can use the Windows-1251 signature file. (I am not sure if this kind of mixing is proper; I wish that The Bat! does as many modern e-mail clients -- automatically encoding any message containing Russian as KOI8-R, "on the fly," when you send the message. It does not have this feature, however, based upon my evaluation of the headers of countless test messages.
I have even installed the Cyrillic Starter Kit, <http://www.cyrillic.com>, which includes fonts for each encoding and a layout that matches my Russian/ English keyboard, but the problem still exists.
The Cyrillic Starter Kit also gives me access to some
special characters commonly used in Russian, such as
the special quote marks for titles (books, etc.)
that look like small double left and right carets
('<<' and '>>'). I can use the special characters with
The Bat! with Windows-1251 encoding, but not KOI8-R!I have friends in Ukraine and Russia who love The Bat! and they obviously have no problems with Russian text, but then they are running the Russian version of their operating system, usually Windows 98 SE, so their operating system natively supports Russian. KOI8-R is the standard encoding for Russian e-mail, and Windows-1251 is the most common encoding for Russian Web pages, as everyone may know.
Given the fact that RITLabs is in Moldova, I never imagined that I'd have so much trouble with this seemingly simple function! I will send a more detailed message to the list soon, but I cannot bear the thought that Outlook is the only e-mail client that handles Russian e-mail with no problems! I have worked on this problem during my entire evaluation period of The Bat!, not getting to explore The Bat!'s other features. The solution should be so simple, but I just cannot figure it out! :-(
Thank you again, everyone! At least I know that NAV works with The Bat! :-)
Cordially,
David -- http://ddickerson.igc.org/
