I agree with most of what you wrote. And I am certainly a proponent
of the idea of what *you* do is *your* business as long as it's only
your business, affecting you, etc.

I think one important issue with Gmail (and soon to be others I'm
sure) that seems to get lost is that while you have elected to be OK
with the e-mail scanning associated with Gmail, those that you
correspond with may not be.

So while I can respect your decision to allow Gmail's policies
(scanning your mail) for you, I have a hard time with the idea of you
deciding that for people you correspond with.

This is really my only real problem with Gmail.

And with the POP/Forwarding options than can be used now, I'm not so
sure if only mail sent from me to a gmail address is susceptible to
being scanned - what happens when that gets forwarded/read through
Gmail?

Note that I'm against this in principal - I consider e-mail to be
inherently NOT private (save for PGP messages and such) - and don't
make a habit of sending personal/private/secure info via e-mail.

But I don't think most of the world operates this way, and I can't
help that nagging feeling that people who don't even know what Gmail
is are having their messages read for advertising purposes.
