Thank you Marck, Andrew, Diego, and Thomas.

I greatly appreciate the response from all of you.

My problem is mostly solved, with three minor elements (well, one not
so minor), which I'll describe below.

First, I think each of you had more or less the same solution, albeit
with slightly different approaches. What I did was to create new
accounts, entering the names of the old accounts exactly as they
existed. This did indeed restore my access to the accounts, with all
their archived emails (literally in the low tens of thousands), along
with all my sorting rules. There was great joy and celebration here,
dancing and hurrahing, and would have been fireworks too were this not
New York City and would that not have brought police to my door.

(Oddly, I had a perplexing temporary glitch in that two of my three
basic accounts worked perfectly, but in one I could only receive
messages but not send messages. So far as I could tell, the General
and Transport settings were the same in all three accounts. I was
baffled and frustrated awhile, fiddled about, and then suddenly, for
no reason I could discern, the problem seemed to disappear. Who am I
to question such gifts?)

Anyway, the problems that remain are these:

1. (And most important) My address books are still gone, and though I
have futzed about some, I haven't been able to restore them.

2. (Next, minor, but a bit of an annoyance) When I go to Reply to a
message now, a small (resizeable) horizontal window containing the
original message opens above the Reply window itself. This was not
the case with my old installation, and again I have searched for the
remedy -- some way to eliminate it -- but can't find it.

3. TB still cheerily awaits my registration and announces same, along
with elapsed day count, each time I open it.

As background: I believe I started with TB somewhere around 1.38 or
1.42 or so, and last upgraded to, and then used for years (till now)
1.48d. In upgrading my system last week, I took the hard drive out of
my old machine and placed it in an external enclosure, connected it to
my new machine as a secondary hard drive by USB. But since the old
drive worked on Windows ME and the new one on Windows XP, I can't run
any of the programs on the old drive. I installed anew all my
significant software onto my new drive, then copied the data files
from the old drive over the virginal data files on the new drive. All
worked splendidly, except for TB -- which prompted my rejoining TUBDL
after years and posting my dilemma and request for help, which you all
so graciously answered.

I do not think I have the years-old registration key stored anywhere.
As I originally said, I'd be happy to relicense, or upgrade to V. 3
and buy a new license, whatever is appropriate. I'd be interested in
your offer, Thomas, to walk me through the upgrade to 2.0 or 3.0,
assuming I could do that without jeopardizing my current access to my
files and the functionality of my present version.

Anyway, that's as complete a picture as I can give. My current
greatest need is to get my address book and groups back. So any help
there, and with the other two more minor questions, would be
appreciated.

Again, thank each and every one of you for yhour swift and generous
help, which did indeed get me up and mostly running again. I am
grateful.

Be well,
Jerry

JM> Hi,

JM> I have been using TB 1.48d (the Christmas edition) on a Windows ME system
happily and without a hitch for years. A week ago, I changed from my old
computer to a new machine with Windows XP,
JM> reinstalled my software and migrated my data.

JM> Everything went successfully but The Bat!

JM> The Bat! no longer works. It thinks it is a brand new program, telling me
I have X number of days left in this trial period, and will not find or
recognize any of my old folders, which are
JM> sitting right there in TB's directory.

JM> I am now unable to gain access to my folders in TB, along with their
several thousands of acrhived personal and business emails, or my sorting rules
or anything else. This is a professional
JM> catastrophe. I am using webmail on an emergency basis, which is better
than a stone and chisel and a carrier condor, but not too much (or so it feels).

JM> I know there is a relatively simple way to correct this, but those archived
nstructions exist in one of the folders that the newly reinstalled TB will not
recognize and thus I can't get at them.
JM> I have done a search in TBUDL archives, but can't find anything.

JM> Please, I'm willing to relicense the program. I happy to download and
purchase the newest version. Anything to make TB functional for me again.

JM> Does anyone have access to the magic bullet, or a simple three-step
miraculous procedure? Can you tell me how to get my beloved Bat back, along
with all its records and many marvelous sorting
JM> rules?

JM> Thank you immensely (he said, sinking slowly into the dark pit of webmail).

JM> Be well,
JM> Jerry
