Word files are only dangerous if you open them with Word.  If you want
to view them safely, you can download and install Microsoft's free Word
Viewer, which lets you open and view Word files but does not permit
modification.  It also won't execute macros, which is why it's safe.

Similar viewers exist for Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
