Just in case anyone's interested, I've been looking at the dates on these files and I think that this might be associated with the Palm LifeDrive software that I'm using to sync my work data onto its hard drive. I had to exclude TB! in the end as the (large) mail files needed to be synced every time and this was time consuming even with USB2. I've moved them all out of the way now and will try a mail sync later in the week. I'm not even going to bother going onto the Palm boards - there just aren't enough hours in the day.
