If I understand you correctly, then this is what I have with Option 1)
above.

I do not have multiple cascaded windows which I have to close.

I click on an entry in the MailTicker.

The message opens, just as if I had clicked on an entry in the message
list of a Folder View window.

With the window displaying the message I've opened *still* open, I
click on the next entry in the MailTicker.

The previous message which I opened disappears from my open window,
and the message I've just clicked on appears. No new window is opened.

However, in the tray, I see tabs labeled "View Folder." To return to
the previously opened message, I can click on the tab. (Or if too many
tabs for the tray, they are stacked vertically and I can see them when
I click on my "The Bat" tab in the tray.)

Effectively, MailTicker is putting me into the folder to which I have
the message filtered. If I click on the toolbar buttons in the opened
message, "Follow Next" or "Follow Previous," the messages as sorted in
that particular folder will appear, even though I had opened the
latest message in that folder from the MailTicker.

Gerard, if you are seeing on your screen multiple windows, cascaded,
that you have to keep closing in order to have an uncluttered screen,
then you are not seeing what I see when I use the MailTicker set to
"Open to new message viewer."

Perhaps this is related to the version 3.60.07 which you have just
installed. I don't actually use the MailTicker as my preferred
message-viewing routine. I normally open the folder I want to read in
from the Account/Folder tree. I read my series of messages unthreaded,
sorted by None according to Received time.

I like to read every message chronologically, in this way. However, if
I'm working in another app, it's handy to have the MailTicker
available--especially if I'm expecting a reply from someone.

All that to say: I might have missed this erratic behavior in v.
3.60.07, when I did run it. That's so many versions ago, that I can't
remember how long I used 3.60.07, or how much I tested it in its beta
phase.

On the other hand, it might be something local to you. Something as
simple as having your Windows preferences set to cascade.

So maybe it's time for me to bow out of the discussion and hand off
the football to Roelof! ;)

I have looked all over, and the only place I can find to deal with
MailTicker is in The Bat!/Options/Preferences/Messages/MailTicker. :(
