When I hit reply to that same message, my editor switches to using
Courier New so that the Russian characters will properly display. My
default editor font, Lucida Sans Typewriter, doesn't have Russian
characters.

Strange that this doesn't seem to happen for you.

The only think that I can think of is that for address book groups,
there's the option to define the character set that should always be
used when writing. Could you have defined a particular character set to
be used?

Otherwise, we'll have to put this down to an errant installation.
