Perhaps I wasn't clear! :) Basically I was expecting to alter the "View messages with alternative layout (text and HTML) as" box to get the behaviour that I wanted e.g for Text and HTML mail text viewer shown by default. However after your post I changed the "View HTML message using" box - which fixed it. I guess it boils down to the fact that messages with the Content-type: text/HTML header are being dealt with by the "View HTML messages using" box rather than the other one. This doesn't sound correct to me, but I'm not sure how this is designed to work.
