I don't expect any problems with a backup from v3, but a backup by an older version might be difficult to restore, so if you were using v1 or v2 then a two step install might be advisable. When you were using v3 you can use the v3 license for the current version. The v3 license is still valid for v4.0.x from v 4.1.x you'll need a new license. As the guys at Ritlabs started publishing v4 versions since last year my guess is that the first 4.1 version won't be far away now, so a license upgrade to v4 will be necessary soon, I guess.
