Followup:

If I have JVM 1.5.0_013 on the path, and I make sure JAVA_HOME is set to 
the right place, it seems to start up okay.

For a little while I had 1.5 on the path, and I had 'set 
JAVA_HOME=$JAVA_HOME_15", but I'd failed to export the setting - Windows 
habits die hard.  I think that was part of the confusion.
