Call for Papers
IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS

Special Issue on
WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS at the NANOSCALE

Submission deadline: February 1, 2012

_____________________________________________________________________

In the recent years, nanotechnologies advanced and rapidly developed due to
their numerous potential applications, in
particular in healthcare and medical scenarios. The potentialities in the use
of nanoscale devices rely also on the
interdisciplinary nature of the competences required going from material
science, to micro-biology, bio-chemistry, just to
name a few. While research led to improve capabilities of individual nanoscale
devices, two aspects, which deserve
attention and have been only slightly addressed, are wireless nanodevices
communications and networking. Integrating
advanced communication and networking capabilities to nanoscale devices, can
dramatically improve the provided
functionality and open new opportunities for nanotechnology applications.
Example applications are not only limited to
healthcare, but can also be extended to food and water quality control, air
pollution monitoring, nuclear, biological and
chemical defense.
However, unlike conventional communication systems, communicating at the
wireless nanoscale brings along new
challenges. For example, new frequency bands have to be utilized – in the order
of the Terahertz – due to the nanoscale
size of nanomachines and, thus, their antennas; also nanonetworks require a
large set of functions to be performed
including addressing, information propagation, medium access control. However,
traditional solutions may not be applied
due to very strict constraints in terms of computing and communication
capabilities characterizing nanomachines. These
challenges can only be addressed through new communication paradigms. The aim
of this special issue is to collect high
quality research papers on both theoretical and practical aspects of Wireless
Communications at the Nanoscale. The
special issue will also collect comprehensive survey papers, where topics of
interest include, but are not limited to:

* Architectures, topologies, and algorithms for wireless nanoscale
communications and nanonetworks
* Modeling and analysis of wireless nanocommunications
* Wireless nanoscale communications with nanoptics and nanophotonics
* Information theoretical approaches to wireless nanoscale communications
* Nanocomponents/structures for wireless communications (e.g., graphene,
nanoribbons, carbon nanotubes (CNT))
* Wireless nanoscale ad hoc and sensor networks
* Wireless quantum communication networks
* Applications for wireless nanoscale communications
* New wireless nanoscale communication paradigms
* Energy models for wireless nanocommunications
* Protocols for wireless electromagnetic/molecular communications
