Special Issue on Cross-layer Innovations

Optical Switching and Networking (OSN), Elsevier

=============================
Full article submission: April 30, 2012
Publication date: First Quarter of 2013
=============================

Aim and Scope:
--------------------
>From the initial concept of shaping information in a single packet and
>forwarding it throughout a network of geographically distributed nodes, the
>Internet has evolved into a more sophisticated network infrastructure
>supporting multiple network technologies and new users' requirements, all
>governed by providers and operators agreements and business relationships.
>Over the years, the continuous technological evolution and the development of
>new Internet services and applications have steered networking research
>towards the foundations of what is usually referred to as the Future Internet.
>Traditionally, the scientific community has progressively split into groups
>working on the upper network layers (namely, layer 3 and up) and those
>tackling the infrastructure, a.k.a. "transport" layer (namely, layers 1 and
>2). This split often resulted in decoupled, isolated and hence
>far-from-optimal contributions. There is a wide consensus nowadays that
>cross-layer interaction and coordination is fundamental for the proper
>architectural design of the Future Internet. Consequently, the design of the
>Future Internet calls for innovations on cross-layer approaches for either
>improving or replacing altogether currently deployed network protocols and
>systems. This is the scope of this special issue.
