Various technologies are proposed to boost the wireless networking capacity. Among them, femtocell and relays are the most promising and natural way of increasing wireless networking capacity by shortening the distance between transmitters and receivers. These type of small-cell networks have drawn much attention in both industry and research communities and have been recognized as an integral technology for 4G mobile networks. Nevertheless, many unplanned femtocells and relay nodes impose significant challenges on broadband wireless networks such as interference mitigation, load balancing, and self-organization.This special issue aims to bring together novel academic and industrial research contributions in this area. We solicit original work in femtocell and relay-based mobile broadband wireless networks. Topics Interference analysis, avoidance, and cancellation Dynamic resource allocation and scheduling Spectrum sharing and load balancing Self-organization, self-configuration, and self-healing Power saving and energy conservation Efficient caching mechanisms Wireless video transmission Cross-layer design Mobility management and handoff Cognitive and collaborative communications Measurement, prototyping, and implementation Performance analysis and simulations Novel network protocols and architectures Security issues Cooperation and synchronization between macrocells and femtocells and among femtocells Multiantenna/MIMO relaysUser-centric wireless networking Paper Submission Submissions of both in-depth research papers and review papers are encouraged. Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jece/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/author/submit/jece/ (after login, select the special issue on Femtocell and Relay Networks). Extended Deadline: April 9th, 2012. _______________________________________________ IEEE Communications Society Tech.
