Sailors,

The start of the regatta season was very rocky to say the least. Ides of
March was a Northern blowout that sent us all home licking our wounds. And
another sailing event on Lake Travis did not get any racing due to
thunderstorms. Hence, I was really restless to get out sailing. I was
watching the weather all week. I noted, no fronts, and no rain! But also
there would be south wind both days 10-20mph and 80+ temps. So, I was
stoked pulling into the park Friday at 5:00. It was gorgeous weather with
60s at night for perfect camping. But it was quite noisy in amongst the
kayak fishing tournament and the scout jamborees. Thank God for wax ear
plugs.

Saturday did not disappoint. It was white capping at 8:30am. Some
forecasts were calling for gusts to 30, but most were 10-20mph and that was
the more accurate forecast. It was a perfect sailing day. It really does
not get much better at wide open Lake Buchanan. The wind was enough to
challenge you, but not overwhelm. It was just a shear joy to have that
kind of weather on and off the beach. It was very tactical racing. If you
played the shifts and puffs, you could make up a lot. Our Illustrious PRO,
Rodger Poe put up 5 races like clockwork. We had 4 boat classes and it was
tight racing. Comic relief came in the final race when Piche lost his hat
during the 4 minute horn and turtled his boat right in the starting area.
We took bets on how quick they would right. They got it up quick, but were
dragged under the boat in haste missing the start.

Sunday promised more of the same. However, it was much lighter in the
morning, the shifts and holes were bigger and you really had to be on your
game staying off the laylines. We got in 3 more races which might be a
record 8 total races. By the end, everybody but Aaron McCulley had their
fill. Aaron went out sailing with a friend after the racing and the wind
had finally turned on.

A big thumbs up go to Mike Beuerlein for chairing the event and doing the
trophies and bringing an extra chase boat. And Brigette worked very hard
all weekend doing registration and helping with food prep etc... We had a
great McCulley spaghetti dinner which after sailing all day, there is
nothing better. Terri Reuwsaat put on an auction to support youth
sailing. Mike Butler did a great job working the park management to get
cables taken down and getting 2 chase boats from the Fire department. Mark
Biscotto did a great job scoring. Big thanks to Duke for putting his boat
in harms way and hosting the RC. We had a bang up group helping Rodger
with Betty Reeh and Kerry. And thanks to Chris Reuwsaat for giving up boat
working time to help out. Sorry if I missed anyone.
