In February I was looking for a PHP IDE/Editor [1] and I haven't found
one that totally satisfied me. At the time, Geany and Zend Studio
provided the best solution for my job, along with the versioning
software control.

7 months after my product review, I tested again new releases from that
software, and curiously the conclusion was the same, but I've opted for
a new approach.

- - Eclipse + PHP PDT / Aptana : full bloatware junk! 160MB and Java for
an PHP editor ? Give me a break!
- - Bluefish : still without autocomplete, but a very good file browser
- - gPHPedit : the fonts are too large and it doesn't have a sidebar file
browser, decent autocomplete although
- - SciTE: blargh!
- - Scribes : autocomplete sucks, no file browser
- - Zend Studio : the mother of all IDE's/Editors for only PHP; it's
closed source.

I'm saving Geany for last because, he's the one I've elected for my
editor since the review, but I'm tired of the brutal lacking gnome-vfs
integration within [2] and it really sucks! I work remotely with files
and I want an editor that allows me to open files in windows shares or
ssh directories. So I'm back to basis, which is using only a couple of
features that can help me writing code - in different languages. For
that I've got 2 options: Bluefish or Gedit.

The last one comes with Fedora, so it's there and is the default file
editor. It has a bunch of plugins like embedded terminal, file browser
pane (that often works), snippets and some more [3].

The other one was Bluefish [4], a old friend of mine. Witch still
doesn't have autocomplete, rather has an decent php, css and javascript
help file and a very good syntax highlight, along with file browser pane
that works as it should. Also it has some features for HTML, CSS and
Python development and has the notion of project. It would be nice to
have code revision integration (CVS, SVN ? )

Meanwhile the version control software that we've been using is SVN with
Trac for project management. One word for this dynamic duo: unbeatable!
