Is EC2 really worth the money ? I know that this service is the pinnacle of elastic computing and on-demand servers and service, but Paradigma is now on a (not cheap) dedicated hosting provider in Portugal, so here's the math that I did:
- Claranet (Paradigma's current host) CPU: Celeron 1.7 RAM: 512 MB HDD: 80 GB Bandwidth: 1TB (in and out) Monthly Cost: 119.19 € Additional Service: 2 IP address, ~10 Mbps Disadvantage: Small scale, fair service Advantage: portuguese traffic, presential - Amazon EC2 CPU: Opteron 1.0 RAM: 1.7 GB HDD: 160 GB Bandwidth: 1TB (in and out) Monthly Cost: 352$ (238€) Additional Service: 1 IP address, ~20Mbps Advantage: Full scaling platform Disadvantage: Not portuguese traffic Also, the pings on any portuguese network to Paradigma are between 10ms and 20ms, but to EC2 are over 150ms. This matters because our main usage is in Portugal and not the 'world'. But I believe that if we got a *lot* of people from Europe and USA, EC2 could really be worthy. -- //VD _______________________________________________ tce mailing list [email protected] http://lists.paradigma.pt/mailman/listinfo/tce
