I think the current design of transit in the Twin Cities is really
geared towards commuters, who have primary goals of getting from their
car at a park-and-ride to work someplace near downtown or the UMN area.
Its sort of a whats-easiest-to-shove-through-the-system thing right now,
IMO.

It would be great to have 'livable, walkable communities' around
transit, but that usually opens a can of worms about forcing people to
live somewhere specific instead of the market deciding or subsidising
peoples lives at the cost of the 'burbs. Of course, the political party
in power is going to create an interesting situation with interactions
between some communities in the Twin Cities area who are pushing for
more choices in transportation and an expansion of existing
infrastructure the urging of the locals. Merely borrowing tomorrows tax
dollars to build roads is short sighted and is going to create a road
system that can't meet the demand and even *less* money to deal with the
issue. Then some bright person will come up with the idea to bond for
roads again! Or raise the taxes even higher to cover the bonds and pay
for new construction! When does it end?!

Thankfully, many people I know do support commuter rail still, which is
less of a boondoggle to them then light rail would ever be. Some of
them would have rather seen commuter rail before light rail as a prudent
use of their tax dollars.
