You can apply but you have to live in the rlght district. Also you need to
find out the term of the appointment and have time to serve. I found out it
required a lot of your time when I looked at that once upon a time.

Also, who on this e-list is applying to be on the new MetCouncil?

How does one do so? What is like to be on the MetCouncil?

Open Appointments are handled by the Secretary of State office. The main
page is http://www.sos.state.mn.us/openapp/index.html, and the list of
current vacancies is at
http://www.sos.state.mn.us/openapp/Jan.%20Open%20Apointmentsnew.htm.

The standard application form is at
http://www.sos.state.mn.us/openapp/Open%20Appointments.pdf

See http://www.sos.state.mn.us/openapp/NOTICEOFVACANCY.doc for special Met
Council openings. The application deadline has been extended until 4:30
p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2003!

I know that the Mayor of Coon Rapids was recommended by the city council
last month for the seat up here. She abstained (actually, wasn't present)
from the vote, of course.

Here is the list of current council members:
http://www.metrocouncil.org/about/members.htm
The council members are appointed by the governor.

The MetCouncil also has a variety of committees:

http://www.metrocouncil.org/about/committees.htm

http://www.metrocouncil.org/about/advisory_committees.htm

I did not find the process of or a deadline for applying to serve on the
citizen's advisory committees or a list of the appointment
committee members on their website (very mysterious)...however
the following person should be able to provide more
information about this...

Griff Wigley is the moderator (at least he was in June 2002)
of the MetCouncil discussion forum and may have more inside
info on the Council.

A list of people appointed to the nominating committee is at
http://timpawlenty.org/index.asp?p=news&detail=196

Tom Weaver is chair. The other 6 are:

- Sherry Broeker, Little Canada, former state legislator and former
Vadnais Heights council member

- John Pacheco, Minneapolis, Xcel Foundation; former member of the
Metropolitan Council

- Mike Burton, Minnetonka, Lundgren Brothers Construction

- Mark Schiffman, Waconia, Waconia City Council member; Himle Horner,
Inc.

- Cyndee Fields, Eagan, Eagan City Council member; State of Minnesota

- Bill Pulkrabek, Oakdale, Washington County Commissioner

Judd Schetnan, Eagan, staff counsel Metropolitan Council, will serve as an
Ex Officio member.

As stated previously on this forum, applications for the Met Council seats
are available at the Secretary of State web site, and are due by January 10.
Public Hearings will be held January 21, 22, 28, and 29, last that I heard.
The nominating committee will make recommendations to the governor about the
appointments, but he is not bound by them. There was not an application
process to be on the nominating committee - people were recommended to the
governor by legislators around the metro area, and he chose the people. The
nominating committee is required to have at least 3 local elected officials.
