Selfishly I'd like to see people have the opportunity to buy into carpool lanes rather than raise gas taxes - because quite frankly I use gas much more often than I use highways.
But somehow the option just doesn't seem right. In essence you're buying yourself out of a ticket. That seems like a slippery slope. On the subject of pricing for roads or congestion - the two proposal which have gotten the most attention are - A GAS TAX INCREASE. or Senator Day's attempt to allow motorists to "Buy In" to Carpool lanes (See Link To Article Below). The "Buy In" proposal is interesting, because it in essence is an attempt to allow citizen to purchase better access to public facilities than what the "regular" citizen is entitled to. This raises some very interesting philosophical questions about government and public goods. Does this "Buy In" proposal have any traction? Or is this just another wacky idea designed to make a point or start a debate.....? Dick Day, R-Owatonna, said he plans to introduce bills allowing single motorists to buy into carpool lanes and a bonding bill that would be repaid through gambling receipts. Earlier this session, Sen. Dean Johnson, DFL-Willmar, introduced a bill that would raise the gas tax by 6 cents, bond for roads and provide money for transit." -- ================================================= Tim Erickson http://www.politalk.com St. Paul, MN - USA 651-643-0722 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ: 105978430 ================================================= _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Metropolitan Issues Forum http://www.e-democracy.org/tcmetro Rules: Sign posts with real name.
