Eva,

That was a very interesting article - made more interesting by the fact
that I have just returned from visiting someone in a new suburban
complex outside Chicago. I live in an older home in Mac Groveland
section of St Paul so I'm with you on the coffee shops and interesting
places. And I'm willing to sacrifice the convenience of an attached
garage, air conditioning, and any built in appliances for my
surroundings. But after a weekend in a very big house I now know more of
the conveniences I'm giving up.

I'm involved with Minnesota Rural Partners
(http://www.minnesotaruralpartners.org/2003_summit.htm), who are
planning a conference this summer on creating communities that promote
support entrepreneurship - one aspect of the conference is community
design. It's been really interesting to learn about the importance of
public spaces in a healthy community. Here are a few articles that talk
a bit about community design:

There is quite the city vs suburbs thread on the Minneapolis Issues
list. I think this is a good forum to discuss this with less heat and
more
light.

I'm curious what folks here think of Pedestrian Friendly districts.
There
is a bit of a controversy over starting one of these on West
Broadway. I've recently moved into the area -- I'm 4 blocks away from
West
Broadway - and I'm rather fond of the Lyn Lake area with coffeeshops and

funky places like Intermedia Arts and Bryant Lake Bowl. Dyna Slutyer
wrote
on the Minneapolis Issues list that this is just South Minneapolis
snobbery
wanting to move into North Minneapolis.

I'd encourage folks on this list to go drive along Glenwood Av. That is
an
area that seems to have so much potential.

So anyway, I suppose I might be a latte drinking snob to kind of like
pedestrian friendly spaces in the urban scene.
