I know we have a pretty broad geographic base on this list so I was wondering if other folks were finding their libraries busy. Also - the libraries are in danger of being cut because they are "non-essential" I am wondering if folks here agree with the "non-essential" label.
I love my local library. I'd hate to see it get overly cut.
But is it essential? Depends on how you define "Essential". It it means "do I like it a lot?" Sure.
If "essential" means "something we can cut police and fire protection for?" I hate to say it, but they'd probably not make the cut in that case.
Don't get me wrong - I read about five times as much as the average person, and I've been a regular at the library since I was five years old. The library is an important part of my kids' education - every bit as vital as their school, honestly. I'd be willing to pay out of pocket to use the library, if it came down to that.
But if we're divvying up a shrinking tax pie - if I have to choose between libraries and fire protection, at least until the crunch is over, then that's my choice. Sorry.
