"How about people on this list? Are you still heading downtown? Why or why not? Do you find as I do that the luxuries of downtown (such as nice restaurants) are coming to a corner near you? Im just curious to try to gauge the future of downtown versus the future of the neighborhood (or suburban downtown)."
Not as much as I used to. For most of my tenure in Minneapolis, I worked downtown. I preferred to because all the buses went there, so it made my life easy. But as businesses move around and layoffs, private and government, end jobs down there, I've increasing been working elsewhere. And I find I just don't spend the same amount of off-work time there when I don't work there. As for things like shopping and dining, I find nearly all I need in city neighborhoods. And I've never ever liked driving downtown. The driving part is easy enough. It is the parking part that is inconvenient. I think they've made it intentionally so. I've made up my mind to go with a good supply of coins because so many of the meters are enforced till 10pm. Other than the Minneapolis and St Paul downtowns, I don't really see anything in the metro area that looks like downtown to me. Get out to the exurbs and you start seeing them again.
