The consulting firm McKinsey & Co. has produced a report that, among other things, compares commuter rail systems, metro systems and bus systems around the world on a number of measures.
One of the surprising things to me was that the operating ratios of commuter rail systems in North America ranged from 44.7% to 64.8% while the range for bus systems was lower at 19.4% to 56.8% (operating ratio is the percentage of costs covered by fare collections). The study can be found at: http://www.mckinseyquarterly.com/article_page.aspx?ar=1442&L2=23 You may have to register to access the report but it is free.
