Pawlenty pushes plan to double ethanol in gasoline

"MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Gov. Tim Pawlenty proposed on Monday to double the portion of
ethanol sold in every gallon of gasoline in the state, from 10 percent to 20 percent."
...

"He said that increasing the use of renewable fuels was one way to lessen the
country's dependence on foreign oil." ...

The Gov. is right in wanting to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. But just that is
only part of the problem for the future. An enormous problem for the future is the
enormous volumes of CO2 and other greenhouse gases accumulating in earth's atmsphere
due to fuel burning, including ethanol.

What is really needed are financial incentives to Conserve, Now ... to reduce vehicle
miles traveled by highway and air, the large amount of energy used in cooling and
heating homes, and the heavy use of energy by industry. Making millions of more cars,
trucks and airplanes adds additional large amounts of energy in the production of
those vehicles.

Earlier today, I wrote:

"It's even worse than that. The "extra" $750 million a year is for
road and transit. Sprawlers, including many local politicians, are
getting into daily commuter traffic congestion tie ups. So now the
government will dump money on the problem and encouraged even more
sprawl by subsidized mass transit bus lanes to downtown from the
outter fringes & back, and commuter rail along main highway routes.
People drive to parking lots, then get a reduce rate for bus commutes
and trips to and from professional football and baseball games.
People should pay the complete price for their long commutes and
downtown entertainment. If they had to pay the full price they
wouldn't live dozens of miles from their daily job locations and
favorite entertainment spots. I walk to work and my routine
entertainment is prairie restoration in my neighborhood. I rarely
drive, don't fly anymore and never take a train or bus. Why should I
have to pay for subsidized travel by millions of other people? Many
these others do have a choice, they can live closer to their work and
play if they just do it, like I did. Some may not be able to, but
they should pay the full price of their excessive travel, which would
mean they'd at least reduce some of their travel."

Gov. Tim Pawlenty should do what I asked Gov. Jesse Ventura and his Met Council to do
in the 1999 "Big Plan" for transportation. I asked the Gov. and Met Council in
Minnesota to "Conserve, Now" ... to reduce vehicle miles traveled by highway and air,
the large amoung of energy used in cooling and heating homes, and the heavy use of
energy by industry.

We need to act to reduce greenhouse gas emission... the world is in crisis due to
rapid global warming.
