AIT databases are easily queried through vanilla SQL, so they're not proprietary in the sense of using a novel type of database. The structure of the databases, however, seem to be a closely-held secret.
As to why, version control is the biggest problem at the moment. We've got to support multiple code bases which have dependencies.
