Let me shed some light on why I ask.

I deleted Normal.dot but left my Internet connection up. I opened Word
and saved a document with some text in it. I then searched for
"Normal.dot" and that file was not found. I closed and opened Word
numerous times but at no time could Normal.dot be found.

Then, I unplugged the network connection. Then, when I opened Word,
saved a file, and searched for Normal.dot, Normal.dot could indeed be
found because it had been created.

This is a local installation of Word.

Cheers,

Sean

(1) is fine
(2) I don't think so, but I could be wrong
(3) is definitely right for this "If Word 2003 cannot find Normal.dot
locally, then Word 2003 re-creates Normal.dot locally and uses it." Not
sure about the internet connection thing though (see (2) above)

Does this sound right.

1) If Word 2003 can find Normal.dot locally, all is well.

2) If Word 2003 cannot find Normal.dot locally, because you deleted the
file, then Word 2003 uses an Internet connection and uses resources at
microsoft.com.

3) If Word 2003 cannot find Normal.dot locally, because you deleted the
file, and Word 2003 cannot use an Internet connection, because you
pulled the network connection, then Word 2003 re-creates Normal.dot
locally and uses it.

Anyone know any different or have thoughts about that?

Cheers,

Sean
