In the US, copyright is automatic at the moment of creation and the primary purpose of the notice is to document the name of the copyright holder and the date of creation for published work.
However, if you are creating your work under contract to a client, the odds are that your contract specifies that it is a "work for hire" situation, which means that your client, not you the creator, is the copyright holder.
