Hi all,

As I said in the conference thread, it's about time I send an
introduction to this list. I joined back in November and have been
lurking ever since, soaking up info.

I'm new to the tech writing field. I had a two-month contract last
fall, sort of a trial by fire. Loved it. Unfortunately the firm that
hired me, who said they loved me, hardly ever hires writers (it's a
two-person software contracting firm).

After that I had very little luck even getting interviews. Everyone
wants actual experience, shockingly enough. Last month I started
working part time as a copy editor for a company that does physics
journals. I've also been doing some freelance writing and editing
(non-tw stuff).

Now that I'm settled into my new job and some other things have
settled down, I'm looking into ways to get some tech writing
experience. (I've already got master's degrees in physics and
journalism, so I really don't want to go back to school!) I'm looking
into volunteer work (like the WordPress Codex and programs on
Sourceforge) and some freelance bidding sites (Guru and eLance).
They're low-paying, but I need clips. And I picked up every free
software trial I could find at the STC conference.
