I do the same. It helps that my phone has vibration settings too, so I
can use a light one that no one will notice but me. Others seem to
have theirs on the earthquake setting... I actually had a business
dinner with a guy whose cell phone actually shook the table!

Honestly though, it's not about cell phone addiction at all... it
comes down to politeness. Some people are just naturally self-absorbed
and the thought to turn their phones off or silence them doesn't even
occur to them. They don't have a problem yelling into their phone on a
crowded bus to tell their friends about their relationship problems or
doctor visit results. Likewise they probably also don't think twice
about letting the door close behind them when you're 10 paces behind
them, or parking in the handicapped space for a quick stop at a
convenience store.

Rude is rude. Technology is an accessory, not the culprit.
