Sure there is. You create a private email list - you don't let anyone else on but yourself...bingo...a private email list - no spam, no harvesting, nothing.
As for the rest of the discussion....what's a few more hundred spam messages a day? Just kidding... I can understand the purpose of a private archive - as a service to its members. With a public archive system - it's true it attracts readers, but does it really attract members? Why join (and open yourself to more spam) when you can read the messages without joining? At least if you don't plan on taking part in the discussions? All in all, I'd prefer a closed archive to avoid more spam - with an open archive - you are hardly going to know where they got your address from or anything else. Having said that, I'm so bombarded with spam, I doubt one more list would matter.
