Which distribution of Linux are you using? I am using Slackware 7.1 with
libpcap 0.4 and tcpdump 3.4.
On my system, I do see the 'packets dropped' count. I do believe this has also
has to do with the quality of the HW. For example the NE2000 drivers are
known to drop packets more often than 3Com.
