I don't see the string "Could not get major" anywhere in the CVS files for tcpdump or libpcap on the tcpdump.org CVS machine, which means that it doesn't appear to be in any version of tcpdump or libpcap that we've put out *or* in the LBL 0.4 libpcap or 3.4 tcpdump. Where did you get that binary package for tcpdump?
