I tried that with the tcpdump that comes with Digital UNIX 4.0F, and it failed to capture anything when I did a "ping 127.0.0.1" on the same machine. This suggests that the loopback device might not support the packet filter; capturing on the loopback device is not possible on all platforms (it's possible on the Linux kernel and in the BSDs, but it's not possible in Solaris, for example), and Digital/Tru64 UNIX may be one of the ones on which it's not possible. You might want to check with Compaq whether it's supported or not. - This is the TCPDUMP workers list.
