Those variables were introduced in 0.2.4. (I can't parse 0.2-50 -- other
than as -49.8 =) ). The configure script wouldn't let you use a libsmi
below 0.2.0 anyway, so I unifdef'd to use the V2 API unconditionally
as Juergen suggested.
