What is "the link offset for the link"?
If it's the offset of the first byte past the link-layer header, note
that
1) you don't know what's at that offset unless you know what
type of packet it is, and the way you find that out is
dependent on the link-layer type, not just on the offset;
2) for some link-layer types, that offset isn't a constant
(Token Ring, for example).
