The -a option was removed in 3.4.0 because the --timer option replaces it. In most cases, --timer defaults to gettimeofday() which is what -a did anyways, so you're not gaining anything by downgrading.
Honestly, if you're trying to get high performance, you really need to read the wiki sections about choosing a timing method and tuning for high-performance: http://tcpreplay.synfin.net/trac/wiki/tcpreplay#ChoosingaTimingMethod Short version: timing by --mbps is bad. Use --topspeed or --pps and --pps-multi instead. That said, 3.4.1 is getting really close to release. If you really have found a serious performance issue with --mbps, I'd like to fix it now, so please send me more info.
