Hello,

I've attempted to find this information in the wiki and on the user list archive, so forgive me if it was in front my nose the whole time and I could not see it!

I'm using tcpreplay to throttle test software which reads multicast traffic to see if it will be able to catch all the data thrown at it when the bandwidth is upped to 30MB/s.

I'd like to understand the output a little better from the command.  For example when I play the pcap at speed with tcpreplay -i eth0 cp1.pcap I get the following:

Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 7960.22 seconds.        Rated: 692885.8 bps, 5.29 Mbps, 535.25 pps

As I increase the speed using -M starting at 15, then 20, 25, 30, 35 I get the following:

Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 2818.67 seconds.        Rated: 1956782.1 bps, 14.93 Mbps, 1511.61 pps
Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 2115.01 seconds.        Rated: 2607800.0 bps, 19.90 Mbps, 2014.52 pps
Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 1700.35 seconds.        Rated: 3243757.5 bps, 24.75 Mbps, 2505.79 pps
Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 1417.32 seconds.        Rated: 3891515.8 bps, 29.69 Mbps, 3006.18 pps
Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 1217.59 seconds.        Rated: 4529869.0 bps, 34.56 Mbps, 3499.31 pps

I then thought I'd give topspeed a try and received this:

Actual: 4260724 packets (5515523064 bytes) sent in 117.95 seconds.        Rated: 46761536.0 bps, 356.76 Mbps, 36123.14 pps

We noticed that 356MB/s is actually greater than the top speed which can be achieved over a GB network ... for my test, I just had a single cat-5e cable going from eth0 on one machine to eth0 on the other and both configured with private LAN addresses.

So I started to do the math and came up with different MB/s calculations given the number of bytes sent in the allotted time.

This is when it occurred to me I might not be understanding what the Rated portion means.  Could someone explain what these measures actually tell me?

Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to offer!

Regards,
Kevin
