Assume the first problematic frame is within the first 1024 ones, so create
an according subset:
editcap -r maccdc2012_00000.pcap short.pcap 1-1024
Confirm hypthesis, then start bisecting on the range
Regarding your other question:

Since 4.3.3 (which I tried first) shows no issues, I'd assume it's
rather a regression.
