Personally, I like the idea though you need to think through the specifics carefully. I have requirements I do not grade not always due to grading workload but also to deliver an important message. Learning and school work is not always about grading. You do things because you learn from them, because professionals do those things.Sometimes we grade them because we must evaluate students at our institution, sometimes not. This does not mean these are of less value as they contribute to learning. Make these points explicitly with students. You might consider involving them in negotiating the details of how you will do this. BUT if they say, well let's just do fewer, explain why they need to do more (you must have reasons related to learning objectives, past experience with student success, etc.). Share that with them.
